I got some questions about Torqstorm supercharger system. My son has a 1978 Trans Am that I put a 1973 455 engine in it that has been bored .060. I purchased the complete hydraulic cam kit from Butler along with all parts needed to upgrade his 6X-4 iron heads.
The block has stock rods new stock pistons. My son would like to purchase a supercharger and install. My question is would the engine hold up in this condition knowing he would also have to change the carburetor? Would the BP8020SP be ok? The engine has 1100 miles on it since rebuild. I would also like to keep boost level down. . He loves the car with the 455 and LS is not an option. Thanks for your time.
We don’t recommend adding boost to an engine with cast pistons and stock rods. The Torque Storm is a fairly low boost system but still we would feel much better if you had forged pistons and aftermarket rods.
Also, we would say move to the BP8021SP as it would be the better option in a cam. The wider lobe separation angle will let the engine trap more cylinder pressure and thus make the blower a bit more efficient.
Here is a good setup for adding boost to an engine;
Forged Piston with H-Beam Rods
Piston/head combination for slightly lower compression ratio than normal pump gas
Cam with slightly wider lobe separation to make the blower more efficient
